Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Many parents can feel concerned about whether nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is safe for their child when going through a dental procedure. Nitrous oxide is incredibly safe, even for children. We offer nitrous oxide at our practice as a safe and effective tool to calm your child during their dental procedures.
Nitrous oxide is given at a controlled rate throughout the whole procedure. Your child may experience a little lightheadedness or a tingly sensation. The term “laughing gas” is usually used because it gives a relaxed and giggly feeling.
This type of sedation is the least intense type of sedation used by dentists. While under this type of sedation, your child should feel more safe and comfortable during the dental procedure.
Pulpal Therapy
Pulpal therapy is a pediatric dental treatment used to treat and preserve a child’s natural tooth that has been affected by an injury or tooth decay. The pulp is soft tissue located inside the teeth. When a tooth becomes damaged, the pulp may be exposed to bacteria, which causes infection and pain.
Dentists can use pulp therapy to treat both primary and permanent teeth. It is important to save the ‘baby teeth’ for the long-term oral health of the child. We use pulp therapy to help ensure an infected primary tooth remains intact until it naturally falls out.
Restorations
Restorative dentistry is the prevention and treatment of diseases or injuries in the teeth. It restores teeth to their best health. Restorative procedures include:
- Pulpotomy (treatment of the nerve inside a tooth)
- Silver, stainless steel crowns
- Silver or white fillings in a tooth
- Extractions (removing teeth)
- Space maintainers
We are pleased to offer high-quality pediatric restorative dentistry at our practice. We offer several restorative options to meet your child’s individual needs. Whatever the issue, we are here to provide your child with restorative solutions to get their little smiles looking and performing like they should.
Extractions
Our dentists will do everything they can to promote healthy oral growth. As part of that effort, we may suggest a tooth extraction for your child.
In most cases, we recommend tooth removals to ensure your child’s permanent teeth develop properly. Sometimes, the primary teeth have become so damaged or decayed that they pose a threat to the rest of the mouth. Other times, there is not enough room for the permanent teeth to erupt from the gum line as they should.
Tooth extractions are simple and can be done with little discomfort for your child. Once the tooth has been removed, we will discuss the best options to maintain the space until your child’s permanent tooth grows in.
If you are worried about your child getting a tooth extracted, we are here to calm your nerves and provide your child with comfortable dental care! Call us today to schedule an appointment for your child’s dental needs!
Space Maintainers
If your child has lost a baby tooth prematurely due to decay, extraction, or dental trauma, a space maintainer can be used in its place. If a tooth is lost too early, it can cause problems for erupting permanent teeth.
A space maintainer is an oral appliance made to “maintain” the space left behind by a missing tooth. If a space maintainer is not used, there is a risk of the following possible complications with your child’s teeth:
- Increased risk of teeth becoming impacted or erupting improperly
- Overcrowding, overlapping, or crooked teeth
- Speech impediments
- Misaligned bite
- Increased need for orthodontic treatment in the future
Luckily, your child will only need to wear their space maintainer for a short time until their permanent teeth begin to erupt. While your child has a space maintainer, it is important to help your child have good brushing and flossing habits to keep the area clean.
